Iraq's fugitive Vice-President Tariq al-Hashemi [says] he fears the country could break up.

He said that policies being pursued by Nouri Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, were causing "sectarian polarisation" and violence.

Mr Hashemi fled Baghdad in December 2011 after allegations that he was implicated in political murders. ... He has always denied the claims [and] speaking during a trip to Qatar, he said he had no intention of staying outside Iraq, and would be returning to Kurdistan soon.
