McConnell: Raising Taxes Will Worsen Economy: “We don’t want to stagnate this economy by raising taxes,” the Kentucky Republican said today on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “There’s bipartisan opposition to what the president is recommending already.”
On the same program, former President Bill Clinton said raising taxes on the rich is the “least harmful” form of tax increases.
McConnell said his party favors overall tax reform and wants to revise the U.S. tax code. But first, he said, the economy needs a jump-start.
“We’re not opposed to more revenue,” he said. “The way you get more revenue is get the economy going. The government is a big winner when the economy is moving.
“Right now, we’ve thrown a big, wet blanket over the private-sector economy,” McConnell continued. “We’ve borrowed too much. We’ve spent too much. We’re drastically over-regulating every aspect of the private sector in our country, and now, we’re threatening to raise taxes on top of it. That’s not going to get the economy moving.”

It's enough to make Luke Skywalker feel homesick. A planet has been discovered 200 million light years away that orbits two stars rather than one, enjoying a double sunset just like the fictional world the Star Wars hero hails from.
Unlike the imaginary desert planet Tatooine in George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi classic, Nasa says the new deep-space find, named Kepler-16b, is cold and gaseous, and similar in size to Saturn.

It's enough to make Luke Skywalker feel homesick. A planet has been discovered 200 million light years away that orbits two stars rather than one, enjoying a double sunset just like the fictional world the Star Wars hero hails from.
Unlike the imaginary desert planet Tatooine in George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi classic, Nasa says the new deep-space find, named Kepler-16b, is cold and gaseous, and similar in size to Saturn.

Marx predicted a crisis of advanced Capitalism based on the rising imbalance of capital and labor in finance-dominated Capitalism. The basic Marxist context is history, not morality, and so the Marxist critique is light on blaming the rich for Capitalism’s core ills and heavy on the inevitability of larger historic forces.
In other words, what’s wrong with advanced Capitalism cannot be fixed by taxing the super-wealthy at the same rate we self-employed pay (40% basic Federal rate), though that would certainly be a fair and just step in the right direction. Advanced Capitalism’s ills run much deeper than superficial “class warfare” models in which the “solution” is to redistribute wealth from the top down the pyramid.
This redistributive “socialist” flavor of advanced Capitalism has bought time–the crisis of the 1930s was staved off for 70 years–but now redistribution as a saving strategy has reached its limits.

Global economy in "danger zone": Zoellick: BEIJING (Reuters) - The world economy is stepping into a "new danger zone," World Bank President Robert Zoellick said on Saturday, as growth slows and investor confidence weakens.
Speaking in Beijing, Zoellick urged Europe and the United States to tackle their debt problems, and noted that near record-high food prices and volatile commodity markets are threatening the most world's vulnerable people.

"We expected a weak report, and what we got was even weaker," said Patrick O'Keefe, director of economic research at J.H. Cohn.
The report was partially helped by 22,000 state workers in Minnesota returning to work after a temporary government shutdown in July, but was also hurt by 45,000 Verizon workers on strike in August.
Adjusting for those events, the economy probably added more like 23,000 jobs in August -- still dismal compared with monthly gains of about 200,000 earlier this year.
Focusing on the one-time blips is like giving a skunk a dinner mint, O'Keefe said. "It's still a skunk and it still stinks."
Economists typically estimate the nation needs to add about 150,000 jobs each month to keep up with population growth alone. It needs even stronger growth to recover the 8.8 million jobs lost during the financial crisis.

The co-chairs of the 9/11 Commission (Thomas Keane and Lee Hamilton) said that the CIA (and likely the White House) “obstructed our investigation”.
The co-chairs of the 9/11 Commission also said that the 9/11 Commissioners knew that military officials misrepresented the facts to the Commission, and the Commission considered recommending criminal charges for such false statements, yet didn’t bother to tell the American people (free subscription required).
Indeed, the co-chairs of the Commission now admit that the Commission largely operated based upon political considerations.
9/11 Commission co-chair Lee Hamilton says “I don’t believe for a minute we got everything right”, that the Commission was set up to fail, that people should keep asking questions about 9/11, that the 9/11 debate should continue, and that the 9/11 Commission report was only “the first draft” of history.
9/11 Commissioner Bob Kerrey said that “There are ample reasons to suspect that there may be some alternative to what we outlined in our version . . . We didn’t have access . . . .”
9/11 Commissioner Timothy Roemer said “We were extremely frustrated with the false statements we were getting”
Former 9/11 Commissioner Max Cleland resigned from the Commission, stating: “It is a national scandal”; “This investigation is now compromised”; and “One of these days we will have to get the full story because the 9-11 issue is so important to America. But this White House wants to cover it up”.
9/11 Commissioner John Lehman said that “We purposely put together a staff that had – in a way – conflicts of interest“.
The Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission (John Farmer) who led the 9/11 staff’s inquiry, said “I was shocked at how different the truth was from the way it was described …. The tapes told a radically different story from what had been told to us and the public for two years…. This is not spin. This is not true.”

This allows member banks to borrow money at no cost. The Fed lends to large banks with little or no control, so that these banks, some of which are owners of the Fed, can really do as they please. The Fed even lends at zero and re-borrows from these banks at a higher level, guaranteeing the banks a riskless profit. Those profits would have gone to the US Treasury and the American taxpayer. These profits for the most part are the result of the creation of money and credit by the Fed.
